Alex Chilton

I was lucky enough to start listening to Big Star at precisely the right time—the tail end of fifteen, when I was deep in the throes of the teenage longing that Alex Chilton and Chris Bell sang about but before but before I thought to wonder if investing so heavily in the band meant I was more or less borrowing someone else’s nostalgia. Which I may have been, but as someone who once or twice wondered quite seriously ‘What’s going on?’ while listening to “What’s Going Ahn,” I feel like I earned it. “Hey! Little Child,” from the Like Flies on Sherbet LP—Chilton’s first full-length after Big Star’s (conclusive) dissolution–is not Chilton or Big Star’s best song, but it does feature everything that’s great about Chilton’s music: it’s simple yet somehow mysterious, and sounds like it was recorded almost totally without effort but takes traditional gestures–that cha-cha-cha rhythm you hear—into menacing, sometimes beautiful places.
